Thoughts on the Affordable Care Act

At President Obama’s news conference last week, he answered several questions about the Affordable Care Act, aka ACA or Obamacare.  You choose.

The President said there will be some rough edges that will need to be worked out.  Talk about an understatement!  From everything I’ve read, there are still many pieces of the puzzle that aren’t fitting together as the kickoff nears.

Robb Mandelbaum of The New York Times wrote a column earlier this week that talked about what “affordable” means in the Affordable Care Act.  If you really want to get a flavor for the complicated regulations that are still not nailed down, hit the link above and read the article.  Just don’t start pulling your hair out of your head…assuming you still have some to pull out.

I was all in favor of universal healthcare as we are the only industrialized nation in the world not to provide this care.  But from even before the bill was signed into law, it seemed the law was going to be a nightmare to set up and execute.  Were there better ways to do this? For sure, but with the power and financial strength of the lobbyists and special interests today, it’s almost impossible to get a clean bill through Congress.

I guess I’ll just sit back, relax, watch it all unfold…and shake my head.

Have a fun weekend…
