Spending Like Drunken Sailors

The vaccine scramble continues. What I’m hearing from our clients is that many already have at least one shot in the arm. Those who have not yet gotten the vaccine are working hard to get their shots as quickly as possible.

I had my first shot a few weeks back and I’m looking forward to getting #2 on Tuesday the 16th. As a precaution, I booked myself off the calendar the next day should I get a reaction. As it ends up, right after I received my shot I got emails that two more appointments had been secured. Hopefully, someone else will get those shots.

With some luck, by mid-summer things may return to somewhat normal. Fingers crossed. But that’s not stopping the politicians from trying to get a huge COVID package through Congress. Last year, the Republicans (with no Democratic pushback) did several big COVID relief bills. Lots of money was sent out… to many who didn’t need it.

Now the Democrats want to do another huge bill, bigger than the COVID relief bills before. Republicans are now deficit hawks since they are out of power. They only like to spend when they control the purse strings. Don’t you just love Washington?

This $1.9 trillion bill will again be sending big checks to lots of folks that don’t need them or haven’t been affected by COVID. On the other hand, folks who are unemployed as a result of COVID are still in the hole. Besides the stimulus checks, this bill is so full of pork, so full of fluff that has nothing to do with COVID, it’s not even funny. I don’t think the Democrats could have written a worse bill after taking the lead from Mr. Trump on the $2,000 per-person stimulus checks.

One more rant: Would it have made sense to vaccinate all teachers and educators early on in this? Just thinking…

Enjoy the weekend and don’t think about the deficit we’re leaving for our kids and grandkids.
