Americans who decide to work for the federal government are offered a unique set of benefits both during and after their careers that differ considerably from civilian benefits. Earlier this year, we here at Franklin Retirement decided to partner with a company that specializes in advising those “feds” as they plan their retirements. Both Nick and I went through an extensive training program, including reading materials, a long set of webinars and training modules, and an in-person bootcamp out in Chicago in May in order to obtain the knowledge necessary to work through those benefits.
This week, we held the first workshop targeted to federal employees. Attendees included employees of the IRS, U.S. Park Police, State Department, FDA, and several military branches, among others. We brought in a speaker from the partner company who is an Army vet and former government employee himself. He gave a seven-hour presentation reviewing the many aspects of federal pensions, retiree health benefits, the federal employee life insurance program, and the government’s Thrift Savings Plan retirement savings plan.
Each workshop attendee is given the opportunity to meet with us to learn more about the benefits that will be available to them upon retirement from federal service. We are looking forward to getting to know these folks and assisting them in planning for life after retirement.
If you know any federal government employees who may need help in this area, let them know that we are now even more knowledgeable on federal benefits. If you’d like to invite them to meet us, just shoot me an email and we’ll make an introduction. And if you would like to send them to our next workshop—and come along with them—you can get that information at https://fedimpact.com/kfrs/ (just remember to bring your SF-182 with you).
